Why Visit Northern Minnesota? During the ice ages over 10,000 years ago large glaciers scoured the landscape in Northern Minnesota and and left a topography comprised of thousands of lakes, rivers, and streams. Northern Minnesota was fortunate in that the bedrock that remained after the glaciers departed was a landscape unsuitable for farming. Over thousands of years Northern Minnesota developed into a Boreal Forest that became home to numerous species of fish, wildlife, and birds. Today, the topography of Northern Minnesota is very much the same as it was for our forebearers thousand of years ago. Visitors and naturalist who came to Northern Minnesota soon began to understand and appreciate the uniqueness and natural beauty of this great wilderness area.

What is the Boundary Waters? The Boundary Waters Wilderness Area is located in the Superior National Forest of Northern Minnesota. The Boundary Waters was first recognized for it's recreational opportunities in 1926, became named the Superior Roadless Area in 1938, and the BWCA in 1958, and was Federally designated under the Wilderness Act in 1964. Then on October 21, 1978 the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Act was established. This Federal legislation was designed to designate the management of this million acre wilderness, insuring it will always remain the same wilderness thousands of travelers have come to enjoy each year. Today the Boundary Waters contains over 1,000 lakes, rivers and streams and has over 1,500 miles of canoe routes. (Information supplied by the Superior National Forest)
